Recently, the Yen stood strongly against the decline of the majority of the Western currencies. This is why you might want to move your savings into an Yen account. Citibank Japan does just that: anybody can use this web form to open an account. When I say anybody, I really mean anybody - including citizens of the long-gone countries such as the Byelorussian SSR and the Socialist Republic of Romania.

Free the Music (some limits apply)

January 24th, 2008

Today, Last.fm announced their upcoming music subscription service. One can head to their website right now and listen to a song for up to three times. The fourth play will be allowed some time in the future, when there will be a monthly fee arrangement. I am confused by two things. First, why is the press release called "Free the Music", when people are supposed to pay for it? And second, how is this service going to coexist with the Youtube-copy service that Last.fm offers? Why pay for music which I can see it for free on the same website? At least, before the video section was created, I had to use Youtube proper for free music.

Listening to your phone - way easier after upgrade to Web 2.0

January 12th, 2008

According to Sentinel and Entreprise quoted by Associated Press, FBI eavesdropping operations took a break due to the fact that the American government organization failed to pay a series of bills from the phone companies. One can see the advantages of the new communication modalities: I am sure that FBI still affords to search keywords in federated Google-to-AOL or Yahoo!-to-MSN-Messenger chats. The American taxpayer can only hope that listening to Skype conversations is cheaper, and that convenient email warnings will remind FBI agents early enough when their Skype Voyeur Pro subscriptions need renewal. It is also expected that Jajah, the website which intermediates phone calls, will allow users to type, besides the caller and the callee phone numbers, the FBI phone number.

NYE in NYC

December 31st, 2007

The first choice is to go and watch the stupid ball in Times Square. In fact, it’s past noon, so probably you’re already there. Sort of sad, no having enough money for real fun and not being allowed to go to a restroom for the rest of the day.
For those who have more money, there is something to help you loose it as if you never had it. The Romanian stars Fuego and Irina Loghin are going to offer an exquisite playback performace somewhere in Queens. Tickets, only :) 175 dollars.

There are things Google can’t do

September 22nd, 2007

Google Calendar cannot help you quit smoking. It is discouraging to read its reluctant reply: these are not life changes, but only calendar changes.

“Open with” box dislikes you

September 1st, 2007

When you want to open a file by right-clicking it in Explorer and selecting from the menu Open with, you might have the surprise on day that the program you were looking for disappeared from the list of options. If you select Choose program, your program is not to be seen in the very long list of programs that Windows believes you could use. Worse, if you click Browse and manually locate the program file, it will not be added to the long list. Read the rest of this entry »

Internet in Western Europe

August 28th, 2007

I am buying a French journal from the publisher, and today I thought I should change the email address I use to login to their website. But you can’t just do that, you fill a form where you ask that (luckily, I didn’t have to send a written request). Then they reply to you, manually, hours later, asking for your password! You have a question, Verizon has no answers

July 24th, 2007

If you have a question regarding a DSL bill from Verizon, you might as well send an email to billingservices@verizon.net. (They say you could do so, here). But if you believe their words, you get back the correct answer:
From: billingservices@verizon.net
To: me
Subject: Re:Billing issue [#1686....]
We apologize, but you have reached an email box that does not respond to incoming emails. It is not monitored.
However, your issues and questions are important to us.

You bet.
